Anja Mohn is a mixed media artist who has exhibited her work internationally including the Goethe Institut New York, Museum Haus der Kunst, Munich, Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow, Roland Aphold Gallery, Basel, Switzerland, and New York City Galleries and art fairs. Anja Mohn's work derives its imagery from the deeper layers of the human psyche, myths, and dream. The photo objects, sound objects, and mixed media installations are poetic assemblages that use minimalist forms, yet are loaded with emotions, and often full of ambivalence: "The poetic ambivalence ... is a fundamental aesthetic attribute of Anja Mohn’s art. Her installations, objects and films are of almost sorrowful joy and blissful melancholy." (Michael Huebl, BNN)
Anja Mohn studied Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany with British Sculptor Michael Sandle, and Japanese Sculptor Hiromi Akiyama. In 2001 she was awarded a one-year grant by the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD, to New York. In 2003 she received the MFA from Parsons the New School. Prior to studying Fine Arts Anja Mohn studied philosophy at the Rheinische-Friedrichs-University of Bonn, Germany. |
About my work:
"There is a dialogue between the inside and the outside; art makes us listen
All forms, movements, color and light carry in themselves their meaning. What they are, their physical form derives from their inner being, their energy and history and, in the case of the man-made environment, the thought and intention that called them into being. The forms that surround us are permeated by inner life and our subconscious mind is the door that connects us to a different perception of the physical world and the immaterial world of time, sound and spirit. Through associative thinking – dreaming - it is open to decipher the underlying life and meaning of our surrounding world. This window of perception is the focus of my work. Long, meditative observation, re-enactment of movement and study of development process, behavior, external and internal phenomena are the means to create works of layered meaning."
